Community experiences of the Novices

EXPERIENCE IN SNEHANILAYAM

I would like to share and thank the Lord for the opportunity to have community experience in Kerala. For me it was first time to be in Snehanilayam community. I liked the place, children and the community. I enjoyed and I was happy being with the children in the workshop, for a short time with the school children and in the community, in their needs, being available in all that when there was need. The structure of the community is like novitiate life, where I lived and enjoyed 2 months being faithful to my prayer life and also in apostolic work.

Being with the children in the workshop I was happy and experienced the loving presence and gentle touch of God. Their innocence, love and care touched me a lot. In spite of the language I could able to communicate and understand the children and able to manage in the absence of Sister and teachers. I enjoyed making cards, stitching, helping children and going out with children I felt happy and loved and experienced the presence of the Lord being with children and in the community.

Finally I would like to thank Sr.Suvarna, Sr.Margaret and the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for giving me this opportunity to have community experience in Snehanilayam. With grateful heart I thank you all.

EXPERIENCE IN VYPIN

I would like to share about my 2 month’s community experience in Vypin. During these 2 months I had many different experiences. I used to go to play school where I enjoyed being with the children. Andin the tailoring class I learned some stitching. Sometime I used to go to the center. One day I got a chance to meet the girls and ladies from Odisha and I am happy to know that our Sisters are working with them.

I saw Sisters are very hardworking and available to the people whoever approached them in their needs. Sr.Lizzie guided me for my recollection and I had personal meeting with her. I am very grateful to her; even though she was busy she gave tie for me. And I saw Sisters are very friendly with the people, working with the youth in the Parish, visiting the families, working with the migrants and doing counseling. I saw our sisters are helping the people in different ways in their needs. In the community also I saw they take care of  each other very much. They are very generous, caring and loving.

I have attended Novena Mass and it was nice experience for me. First time saw the youth are praying with so much devotion and it touched e very much. I felt people are so generous and loving. Though I don’t know the language I used to talk with them in Hindi and English, and with old people I used to do  sign language.  Sometimes they laughed at me. But anyway enjoyed and I am happy to have all those experiences. I am very grateful and thank the congregation for giving me  this  opportunity to have the community experience.(Margaret Soreng.Naci)

My Experiences in Odisha

Community experience was one of the most awaited events in my second year novitiate life. By God’s grace and with the support of our Sisters in Snehadhara community I could enjoy these 2 months well. A lot of variety experiences I had during this period. I am very grateful to Sr.Sangita, the Superior of my community in Odisha, for giving me such variety of opportunities. I am happy to share my experiences here.

Our Sisters are very much involved in various apostolates in Snehadhara community. I enjoyed a lot with the play school children there. I was happy for the chances I got to share and talk with our hostel students. They all are very talented in singing, dancing etc. I could converse with them in Hindi. Stitching classes, English tuition, Spoken English classes, helping the rikshaw pullers, Acupressure therapy etc. like many apostolates are active there and our Sisters are very much dedicated to them.

I got many opportunities to participate in different feasts and occasions in the Parish Church. I enjoyed a lot the lively Eucharistic Celebration there with their traditional rituals and wonderful singing. In the month of October we conducted Rosary prayer in the houses of our zone. There I saw most of them were prayerful devotees and they liked to gather to pray. Another thing I noticed in them was their simplicity. The people are very simple and that simplicity I found even in their Bishop Kishor Kumar Kujur. I am really fortunate to attend the Mass celebrated by him 4 times in these 2 months.

There once I attended CRI zonal meeting which was an opportunity for me to meet religious from different congregations. Also Sr.Sangita and Sr.Celine took me to the nearby religious houses for a visit at different occasions. All these helped me to have an exposure to different apostolate. I had the opportunity to go for vocation work in Simdega with Sr.Aleena. Twice we visited the high school girls and the encounter with those girls was good. The climax of my experience was the trip to Kolkata with the hostel students and the community. It was really God’s great blessing I believe, and also the kindness of our Sisters. I could get a chance to visit Mother Teresa’s tomb and Our Lady’s Shrine in Bandel too.

I am very grateful to the Lord God and to our Congregation for providing us such an opportunity to live and to experience our communities during the novitiate period. I extend my gratitude to Sr.Sangita and all our Sisters in Shehadhara Community for their support, guidance, love, concern and kindness to me. I pray that the Lord may continue to bless them in all their apostolate. (Ayana B Mathew.Naci)

My Experience in Roha

I am very glad to share my experiences in Roha community. I really enjoyed 2 months in Roha. In the beginning I was little bit worried since I did not have the language. But I could manage very well. For me this experience was memorable and wonderful. I really learned many things about community life, how it varies in different places. Also this experience helped me to know more about Roha mission.

I did not feel out of place there, I felt I was at home. Sr.Monti was really a guide for me and she gave me different experiences of Roha. I enjoyed the presence of Sr.Kitty, Sr.Viji and Sr.Alma in the community. I really experienced their hospitality and sensitivity. They were very kind towards me and they treated me as a matured person which made me happy. Even though they were busy I could see the unity and dedication. I was very much taken up by the work of our Sisters there. They are very hard working and I saw their zeal and enthusiasm in working for the poorest of the poor. It inspired me a lot and also these experiences have strengthened my call.

My experience being with the children and in the hostel was very nice. I could able to manage with them. It was very interesting to be with the ‘Adivasi’ people there. Because of the language problem, I thought I would not be able to interact with them. But people were very good with me. Even with my broken Marati and Hindi I managed well. Somehow we both understood each other and that gave me lot of joy and satisfaction. I enjoyed the Balamela and the visits to the ‘vadis’.

I tried my best to be available wherever there was a need. For me this experience was very meaningful and enriching. I was very happy to be in Roha community and I take this opportunity to thank Srs.Monti, Kitty, Viji and Alma for all their support, guidance, love and care which I experienced during these 2 months. I also thank our Congregation for giving me this opportunity. I really enjoyed it a lot. (Ashna Joseph.Naci)

Dilkhush Family Day

Christmas is the perfect time to celebrate the love of God and to create memories with our family that will last forever.

On 22nd December 2017 we at Dilkhush  along  with the Sheltered workshop, children,  parents and siblings celebrated FAMILY DAY on a very grand scale like never before.

There were games, music, masti , dance, scrumptious food and various performances by the Dilkhush Family.

Our beloved children put up a beautiful and heartwarming tableau of the Christmas story welcoming the lord Jesus Christ into our hearts.  The very efficient PTA members danced on to the tunes of various  bollywood songs entertaining us thoroughly .

What is Christmas without Santa Claus?

Our ex student Kim dressed up as Santa Claus was mobbed by the children as he spread smiles and joy throughout the evening.

Despite our cultural differences, Dilkhush Family Day was the perfect example of ‘Unity and Diversity ‘ , as we swayed together into the spirit of Christmas.

Christmas Party by St.Luke’s Medical Guild

This is the season to spread the true spirit of Christmas, and to help usher in this joyous spirit, some doctors and their families from the St Luke’s Medical Guild organised a delicious lunch and an

afternoon of carol singing for the staff and students of the school and workshop. The students enjoyed the lunch and the fun interaction with the doctors and their families. The guild also sponsored the children’s Christmas gifts this year. A loud cheer goes out to all the doctors who took the time off from their busy schedule to mingle and interact with our students.

Our Thirst led to HIM …

At St Thomas Garnet’s we celebrated Advent and Christmas in a wide variety of ways:

We started in early December with our annual Christmas card competition. The winning cards were sent to people and organisations in our local community

This year we celebrated our Advent Mass as a school, and Year 3 & 4 also joined with St Peter’s School for their Mass at Corpus Christi Church.

Each class during their mindfulness prayer time received a message for preparing to welcome the child Jesus in their interaction with their friends and friends.

Year 6 children took part in the Primary School annual Carol Concert at the Bournemouth Pavilion. We put up bright and thoughtful displays around the school, which helps us, reflect on the true meaning of Christmas’.

The younger children in Pre-school and Key stage 1  joined together to perform ‘The Nativity’ while the older children in years 3 – 6 celebrated the Christmas story through poetry, song& readings, in a candlelight service at Corpus Christi church.

Year 6 joined many other schools and the Salvation Army, at the Bournemouth Football Club ground, for a Charity Carol Service.

…and just for fun, we finish with a carol concert for the children & parents in the school hall.

Children’s Day

“Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs” (Mth. 19;14). India’s first President Pandith Jawaharlal Nehru loved the children and so he is called Chacha Nehru.  India celebrates children’s day on his birthday. This year too on 14th November children’s day was celebrated all over India to mark his 128th birth anniversary. On the same day Snehadhara celebrated children’s day (Bal Diwas) with the children of our neighborhood. About 43 children from nursery to class 5th were

present. They were welcomed with the badges. We began the program with prayer song by hostel students.  The Hostel students conducted varieties of entertaining games.  Painting competition too was held for each class. At the end of the program they were given small gift. Children enjoyed the evening with us. They are looking forward to meet again.

World Day of Poor

“Let us love, not with words but with deeds”. As our response to Pope Francis on the first World Day of Poor, we had invited children from the railway station to our house on 20th November. Around 11 children were present. When they came they were given tea and biscuits. They played indoor games while some of them watched TV. Afternoon they were served  lunch. After lunch each one was given a sweater and sweets. They went back happily.

“May all know and love Jesus” (St. Raphaela Mary)

The pupils of Corpus Christi Catholic School shared a wonderful experience in the chapel of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Boscombe. Eight classes along with the staff participated in the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. For many children this was their first experience and they shared a special and spiritual time together. Music, reflection, sharing, peaceful prayer and stillness combined perfectly together to provide an uplifting experience for everyone. ‘I feel very peaceful and close to God’, a boy in Year 5 said as he left the chapel. A member of staff said that “it was wonderful to have a time of peace and reflection and that I truly felt the presence of our Lord at that time”.

For us Handmaids it has been a great joy to see the children and the staff coming to be with Jesus. This is what St.Raphaela always desired that each person could meet Jesus in adoration in a deeper way.

My life is an endless act of gratitude for God’s marvellous works in me!!!

I was born on 31st October, 1925 just a few months earlier St.Teresa of Infant Jesus was canonized.  So my Godmother chose her name for my baptism.Among the nine children, I became the 2nd in the family because my previous sister died when she was 10 months old.

By God’s grace my parents were good Christians and very religious. They were   inspiration for all of us by their good example and love.

My father was a lawyer. My mother was an ex- student of Sacred Heart School. She was sharing her good formation of teaching us catechism, history of the church, the gospel and so on according to our age and our capacity. I remember the day she was telling us about the original sin and because of that fault, one day we all have to die. I had a shock; I could not accept that reality. I was not too happy to leave everything of this world forever, I started crying and crying, very disappointed because my parents could not help me to solve that problem. And that was because of this original sin death was a punishment for all mankind. My mother was consoling me telling that if we are good and pray we would go to heaven when we die. Although I was small that was for me the first understanding of the need of prayer. In such a way that when I was playing with my brothers and sisters sometimes I used to disappear from the group and quietly went to pray. I knelt down in my room for a while and went back again to play. “Where did you go? You are always spoiling our play”.  They said. I never answered and  I kept my secret.

During that time, politically Spain was in a very difficult moment, the time of the Republic, the catholics were persecuted. As my father was first in the black list to be killed, from Reus where we were living we shifted to Barcelona. In a few months a civil war started and we went through a very difficult time surrounded by bombs, guns, lack of food etc. The churches were on fire, many people were killed and my family were divided and  in different groups went abroad to save our lives. We were in France first, then we moved to Italy, came back to the north of Spain where there were no communist. During those years we were changing schools until the war had finished then we went back to our place. My last school was the Sacred heart in Barcelona, a boarding school which I really liked in spite of all the hardships we had to experience due to the post war.

While finishing my studies I was enjoying sports, outing and so on but tat the same time my great desire was to go to Rome to see the Pope. To my surprise I was refused to get a passport unless I work for a couple of years in some social work. Because of this impediment I decided to study to become a nurse. So i could look after the sick people after finishing the two years of training.

One day my spiritual director told me that after known me for a quite long time he understood that Our Lord was calling me for religious life. I was terribly shocked and said that I had never thought about it but if that was God’s will I would follow Him. He understood that I was quiet upset with that unexpected proposal. So very calmly he said “Do not answer me now, think about it and next time when you come to see me we will discuss the matter”. The days were passing on with that turmoil in my heart I remembered the thought that I had from my childhood tha

t to go to heaven we need to be baptized. It worried me and   I was always thinking what about the pagans? That spark of light helped me to see that if that was a call from God, I would be a Missionary. But how? Now the surprise was from my spiritual director when my answer was, “Yes but i want to be a missionary…?

One day a friend of mine who wanted to be a handmaid invited me to go with her to see the sisters. I did not know them at all but I went with her as companion. I was listening the conversation about vocation between my friend and the Mother Provincial. At the end Mother Provincial asked me, “What about you?” I said, “No. I want to be a missionary”. She was surprised at my quick reaction and said, if you have a missionary vocation you will go to the mission. Later on I understood that St.Raphaela Mary was pulling me to be a handmaid although I was not aware of it at that moment. Without any hesitations I decided to become a handmaid and I could go to the mission which was the greatest desire of my life.

I joined in Pamplona in October 1951 on the feast of Christ the King and when I finished my novitiate I was sent to the missions in Japan on 12th May 1954 and my dream had become true.

When I finished my term in Nagano I went to Tokyo and the Mother General sent me to London to do the Montessori course. When I was finishing the course, I got a letter from mother general that we are going to open a new house in India and I could be in charge of it.  I was really surprised by this proposal but understanding that it was the will of God I answered at once telling that I was ready.

On 8th January 1977, Sr.Veronica and I left for Mumbai to go to our new mission in Cochin Kerala. On 24th January we arrived in Kochi and on 25th January, the feast of the St.Paul’s conversion we had the foundation of the house of Kochi

Now looking back and realizing what has been the plan of God in my life I see very clearly that the seed of my inner missionary vocation was sown in my childhood had been accomplished many years later through the help of several people who God had chosen to enlighten my path. I have experienced how the Lord walked with me in my joys and sorrows and difficulties. I realised that my help always comes from the Lord who created me and loves me unconditionally.
