Dilkhush Teachers’ Training Centre began in July 1971, in the same year as Dilkhush Special School, with the specific purpose of giving quality training to persons desirous of teaching children with Intellectual disabilities. It is one of the pioneering institutions in the field of special education and trainees who have passed out from our institution are working not only in schools in and around Mumbai, but in other parts of the country, and also abroad. Dilkhush Teacher’s Training Centre offers a two-year Diploma in Special Education in Mental Retardation and Associated Disabilities. It is a full time course, aimed at rehabilitating persons with Mental Handicap, keeping in view the diverse factors such as age, degree of severity, family background, socio-economic settings, and cultural factors that make up the environment of the person with a handicap. The course is recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India. All persons who do this course should get themselves registered with RCI, which maintains a register of professionals working in the field of rehabilitation of persons with a handicap. AIM To empower persons preparing themselves to rehabilitate persons with Mental Retardation and Associated Disabilities, to promote the all round development of children of school going age, entrusted to them, give suitable support to their families, and help make society aware of their duty to respond to the needs of the handicapped.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of Mental Retardation, Associated Disabilities, Autism and Cerebral Palsy, multiple disabilities and conduct an educational assessment.
  2. Acquire knowledge of human growth, development, basic conditions of learning and motivation.
  3. Acquaint themselves with concepts, principles and approaches to curriculum planning. Plan appropriate curriculum programmes.
  4. Devise instructional and class room management strategies, Behaviour Management Techniques and appropriate Methods of Teaching Curricular, co-curricular and prevocational skills.
  5. Incorporate activities in the classroom to enhance speech and language skills.
  6. Incorporate activities in the classroom to enhance motor and sensory skills through occupational and physiotherapeutic exercises.
  7. Plan and implement programmes for children with Associated Disabilities, Autism, Cerebral Palsy and Multiple Disabilities.
  8. Give appropriate support to families having a person with Mental Retardation and associated disabilities, and promote integration in the local community.
